President Obama conceded Monday that immigration reform will not happen this year, as reported by The Washington Post and various other leading news outlets this week. Frustrated by the inaction of Congress, the President has pledged that he will not hesitate to utilize his executive powers to fix as much of the immigration system as possible within the confines of existing law. In this blog post, I will provide one example as to how the President could utilize his power of the pen by writing an Executive Order requiring the Attorney General to grant parole in place to undocumented immediate relatives of U.S. citizens and thereby create a lawful pathway to permanent residency. read more →

Both Mehlman Barnes LLP partners are active in the immigration bar through ongoing contributions to the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). For the 2014-2015 term, Partner Sharon Mehlman will be serving as the Chair of the Annual Conference Committee and Co-Chair of the Verification and Documentation Liaison Committee at a national level. Partner Shannon Napier Barnes will be serving as Secretary of the San Diego AILA Chapter this year also will be serving as a member of national committees to include the Military Assistance Program (MAP) Taskforce and the SSA/DMV/SAVE Taskforce.
